South Deep Gold Mine is looking for suitable candidates who want to pursue a career in mining and are interested in gaining structured practical workplace experience.

The programme combines practical work-based learning with technical training. Learners will be expected to follow mine safety requirements, participate in technical evaluations and develop the skills required to work effectively in a mining environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Learner Miner, successful applicants will receive practical exposure to workplace activities while being expected to maintain high standards of safety and performance.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Applying safe work practices in accordance with prescribed standards, procedures and site requirements.
  • Identifying, reporting and escalating safety, health, environmental and other risk conditions.
  • Reporting incidents and accidents to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Participating in risk assessments with artisans before work is carried out.
  • Assisting artisans with daily maintenance activities.
  • Handling, cleaning and storing tools safely.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping in workshops, maintenance areas and surrounding areas.
  • Reporting hazards or risks that could affect the health and safety of employees.
  • Performing standby duties when required.
  • Participating in prescribed technical training and workplace learning activities.

Medical and Physical Requirements

Because the position is based in a mining environment, applicants must be able to meet the applicable occupational health and safety requirements.

Candidates will need to be declared medically fit for the position and environment through a risk-based medical examination conducted at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre.

A Heat Tolerance Screening test and other suitability assessments may also be required.

  • Be a resident of one of the South Deep host communities.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants interested in the Gold Fields Learner Miner Learnership must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or an equivalent qualification.
  • An N3 qualification with two languages passed may also be accepted.
  • Be medically fit for the position and mining environment.
  • Successfully complete the required medical assessment at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre.
  • Pass the required Heat Tolerance Screening test.
  • Successfully complete any additional assessments or tests that may be required to determine suitability for employment.

Meeting the minimum requirements does not necessarily guarantee selection. Applicants may be required to undergo further screening and assessment as part of the recruitment process.
