About the Learnership
The Dispensary Support Learnership is designed to provide learners with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required to qualify as a Basic Pharmacist Assistant.
Throughout the programme, learners will gain experience in pharmaceutical operations, customer service, medicine dispensing support, stock management, and healthcare administration while working under the supervision of registered pharmacists.
After successfully completing the programme and registering with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC), learners may be offered permanent employment opportunities within Dis-Chem Pharmacies.
Key Responsibilities
Successful learners will assist with a variety of pharmacy-related duties, including:
- Assisting with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines and scheduled substances.
- Supporting the preparation and compounding of non-sterile medicines according to approved Standard Operating Procedures.
- Assisting with unpacking, merchandising, and organising dispensary and over-the-counter (OTC) stock.
- Learning to interpret prescriptions accurately in accordance with South African Pharmaceutical Council regulations.
- Assisting with accurate picking, packing, labelling, and checking of medication.
- Ensuring all medication is checked and signed off by a registered pharmacist.
- Monitoring medicine stock levels and expiry dates.
- Maintaining a clean and organised dispensary.
- Following up with patients regarding prescriptions and appointments.
- Assisting with call centre scripts and patient telephone enquiries.
- Promoting healthy living by providing basic health information.
- Assisting with medical aid authorisations for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication.
- Reporting stock shortages and stock discrepancies.
- Receiving dispensary stock according to company procedures.
- Supporting the Dispensary Manager with daily operational tasks.
